Sean Cox: Real Name, No Gimmicks

You’ve probably figured out by now, my name is Sean Cox, I’m an experienced tattoo artist living and working in beautiful New Westminster BC. At Royal Anchor Tattoo, I’m known for my bright, bold designs. With linework thiccer than a bowl of oatmeal and colour so loud it could technically be classified as a noise complaint, I like to exotically cartoonify unsuspecting woodland creatures and late 20th century childhood heroes. Animals, monsters, fantasy creatures, pinups, robots and more, a lil bit of lowbrow fun never hurt anyone (Ok, maybe it hurts a little).

Then and Now

In 2006 I jumped ship from a hard labour job and landed squarely in the life raft that is tattooing. It was a community of outsiders, weirdos and assorted riff raff. I knew I was home. Back then tattoos were about setting yourself apart and making a statement about who you really are. Valuing authenticity the way I do, this was a match made in heaven.

Nowadays everyone’s tattooed. Your grandma’s inked, your niece just bought a “tat-gun” off amazon, even the cops are sportin job stoppers on their hands and necks. It’s normal. It’s trendy (yuck). I keep seeing the same pinterest’s greatest hits tattooed over and over again. People could have anything under the sun tattooed, yet they went and got whatever the current celebrity is wearing. These aren’t skinny jeans you can just donate to a thrift store when you’re done with them. A tattoo is a lifetime commitment that is ever changing. An inexperienced artist may not make room for those changes.
